Supporting Indigenous youth to realize their potential

As part of the Broadway Health Collective’s commitment to Reconciliation in Action, I had the pleasure of meeting with Ted View, principal at Oskāyak High School, to discuss the possibility of community collaboration this Christmas. Through my discussion with Ted, I learned that attendance was one of the major challenges at Oskāyak, in which Ted and staff were committed to increasing the current 54% attendance rate. As Ted spoke about the significant relationship between school attendance and positive academic and social outcomes, with hopes of increasing youth attendance at school, we decided to collaborate on an Attendance Incentive.

Read on for more details on this collaboration and how you can support this work through donations.

We envision the Attendance Incentive to involve weekly, monthly, and yearly draws. Youth that achieve an 80% (4/5 days) attendance at the end of the week will be entered into a draw for a $10 gift card (distributed at the end of the week), $30-50 gift card (distributed at end of the month), and a lunch or movie experience for youth in the school who have achieved this goal by the end of the academic bloc
Ted and I believe in further opportunities to bring Oskāyak and BHC together for a year round community engagement that expands beyond Christmas. While we intend to start with the Attendance Incentive, we are hopeful that our collaboration can continue throughout the year, and include involvement with community Pow wows, feasts, activist walks, and canoe building. In this way we see Reconciliation in Action as not just a project of community support, but also how BHC can learn with and from Indigenous self-determination and sovereignty.
In helping youth realize their full potential by encouraging a more consistent attendance, we call on the help of the Broadway community and its friends and partners.

Please consider donating by e-transfer, providing a cash donation of any size and/or a gift card ($10 - $20) during your next appointment. All proceeds will go towards the Attendance Incentive.
Every amount counts and we are grateful for any donations. Thank you for being an important part of the BHC community!
